2020 Alumni Awards Call for Nominations

These awards are designed to recognize alumni who personify the University’s tradition as an environment for excellence. Through outstanding achievements and contributions award recipients bring honor to Norfolk State University.

NSU is accepting nominees for the following awards:

  1. The Distinguished Alumni Award which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves through their professional/personal achievements and citizenship.
  2. The Graduate Of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award which recognizes the professional and civic accomplishments of alumni who have graduated within the last ten years.

Nomination Process

  1. Nominations may be submitted by alumni, faculty, staff, friends of NSU, and the general public.
  2. Nomination forms must be completed in its entirety. Incomplete forms will not be considered.
  3. Nominations must be successfully submitted online by 4 p.m. on Monday, February 17, 2020. ALL NOMINATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE.
  4. Current members of the NSU Board of Visitors and current officers of NSU's affiliate boards (NSUF, NSUAF, NSUAA & NSU-RIF) will not be considered.

Distinguished Alumni Award Selection Criteria

  1. Be a graduate of Norfolk State University or its predecessors.
  2. Be distinguished in his or her chosen business, profession or life's work and should have received some previous recognition from contemporaries.
  3. Have demonstrated a continuing interest in NSU and must have contributed time, talent and money to one or more programs to benefit the university.
  4. Be a person of such integrity, stature, and demonstrated ability that the faculty, staff, students and alumni of NSU will take pride in, and be inspired by, his or her recognition.

Graduate Of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award Selection Criteria

  1. Received a bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State University within the last ten years.
  2. Have demonstrated success in his or her professional field.
  3. Have demonstrated a continuing interest in NSU and must have contributed time, talent and money to one or more programs to benefit the university.
  4. Be a person of such integrity, stature, and demonstrated ability that the students of NSU will take pride in, and be inspired by, his or her recognition.

Selection Committee Composition and Duties

  1. The selection committee, appointed by the Vice President of University Advancement will be composed of seven (7) members that represent NSU alumni, faculty, staff, retirees and citizens of the greater community.
  2. Alumni cannot serve on the committee in the year that they are a nominee.
  3. The selection committee shall evaluate candidates, and submit evaluations and recommendations to the executive director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving for the President's consideration.
  4. Committee members must agree to maintain confidentiality and preserve the integrity of the selection process.

Notification and Responsibilities

  1. Recipients will receive notification in early March.
  2. Recipients are required to attend the award reception/dinner and the spring Commencement ceremony.
  3. Recipients are required to provide a current biography and recent photograph.
  4. Recipients will be made public after notification and acceptance of the award.
